Older adults, people with Crohn’s disease, and those who have had gastric surgery are all more vulnerable than the general population.

If your GP has confirmed a B12 deficiency, the standard course is a loading phase first six injections over two weeks, followed by a maintenance injection every two to three months. If you are having injections for prevention rather than treating a confirmed deficiency, every two to three months is usually enough from the start. Bring any blood results with you so we can work out which applies.
Conditions like pernicious anaemia typically require a more frequent schedule, particularly in the early weeks of treatment. Your pharmacist will advise you based on your consultation and any existing test results you bring.

It depends why you are having it. If you are a vegan, take metformin or a PPI, or have had bariatric surgery, we can give a preventive injection without a test. If you think you may already be deficient, get tested first, either through your GP or privately. Injecting B12 before testing corrects the blood result without telling anyone why the level was low, and if the cause is pernicious anaemia that matters.
